A Bullard High School teacher was arrested by Clovis police on suspicion of “on-going sexual assaults.”
Donald Mayhew, 58, a language arts teacher at Bullard High School was apprehended after a three-month investigation, police announced in a news release. Police searched his Clovis home where he was arrested.
Mayhew worked for Fresno Unified for four years and spent three of them at Bullard High, district officials confirmed.
The victim was an adult female with whom Mayhew was familiar, police said. The alleged crimes occurred at his home. Officers say she was drugged, and then raped multiple times while unconscious.
Fresno Unified School District officials said Mayhew’s arrest is unrelated to his work at the school. Reports say that nothing happened at the school, and there are no students or children involved.
“The person has been placed on administrative leave pending the results of the criminal investigation. Fresno Unified strives each day to provide a safe learning environment for all of our students and staff,” the statement said.
The criminal investigation concluded with an arrest in a Clovis neighborhood where detectives apprehended Donald Mayhew without incident. He was charged with four felony crimes:
- Sodomy of an unconscious person;
- Using an intoxicating substance to rape someone;
- Giving drugs during the commission of a felony; and
- Poisoning the food or drink of another person.
After Mayhew was arrested, the Fresno Unified School district released a statement about the incident:
This morning, Fresno Unified was informed of the arrest of one of our employees. The incident does not involve the district in any way. The person has been placed on administrative leave pending the results of the criminal investigation. Fresno Unified strives each day to provide a safe learning environment for all of our students and staff.
Predator Drugged Victim
Investigators said Mayhew admitted using Ambien in the victim’s drink. Mayhew would serve the drink to her and then allegedly sexually assault her.
“The victim, in this case, was the victim of a number of different sexual assaults, and suspect possibly used some sort of drugs,” said Sergeant Jim Koch.
According to a search warrant, the victim said it went on for several years. She said the next day she wouldn’t have any recollection of the previous night. Clovis detectives say the alleged sexual assaults happened prior to June 2016.
Suspect is Former Newspaper Reporter
Mayhew was employed as a feature writer for The Fresno Bee for 27 years until he quit in 2008. He moved on to teach English at Bullard High School.
“It is unusual to see someone drugged and then victimized,” said Koch.
Mayhew has posted bail and is on administrative leave.
“You have the trust two people have and no one really knows what someone else can do,” said Sgt. Koch.
We have seen numerous incidents of sexual assault by educators and other school employees who are placed positions of trust. This assault, although it involved an adult victim, could have easily involved students at the high school where the defendant worked.
